Moscow celebrates the 871st anniversary of its foundation on September 8-9, 2018

The Museum Collection team congratulates all citizens and guests of the capital on the upcoming holiday - City Foundation Day!

Some facts from the holiday history:
The tradition to celebrate the city's day emerged long ago. According to the decree of Emperor Nicholas I, lush celebrations were organized to celebrate the 700th city foundation anniversary. On January 1, 1847, the residents took part in prayer services held in Moscow churches. Oil lamps illuminated the Kremlin, the buildings of the Moscow University, the monument to Minin and Pozharsky, the Novodevichy Convent and the Governor-General's house on Tverskaya Street.

The next large-scale citywide celebration of the City Day in Moscow was organized in the post-war period. The ceremonial events were timed to coincide with the 800th city anniversary, the festival was held on September 7, 1947. On the anniversary date, the Andrei Rublyov Central Museum of Ancient Russian Culture and Art was opened in the Spaso-Andronikov Monastery, and the Moscow-Volga Canal was renamed in the Moscow Canal. Folk festivals were organized in the city, and the holiday was closed by fireworks.

The next large-scale Moscow foundation holiday was organized in 1997 for marking its 850th anniversary. The celebrations were held on September 6 and 7 - the first weekend days of autumn. Since this year, the City Day in Moscow was celebrated annually.

This year, the main celebrations will traditionally take place on September 8-9 in Tverskaya Street, Red Square, Vasilevskiy Spusk, Poklonnaya Hill and Vorobyovy Gory. Folk festivities and concerts will be held throughout the city. The celebration will be closed by festive fireworks.
