"The Mechanical Heart". New thematic exhibition at the museum Collection
Where is the boundary between a living being and a mechanism? and what are the limits of man's desire to breathe life into matter?
And how far can a person go in the desire to animate the inanimate?
Cast your mind back to the 18th century. Mechanical birds sing while flapping their wings, automata musicians play musical instruments, and mysterious androids write letters, draw portraits, and even play chess. And all this happens long before the invention of electricity! These amazing mechanisms not only sparked the public's imagination but also became the focus of deep philosophical debates, inspiring great masters of literature and music – from Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffmann and Vladimir Odoevsky to Jacques Offenbach.
"The Mechanical Heart" exhibition at the "Collection" Museum invites you to immerse yourself in the fascinating world of 18th-19th century clocks and automatons. The exposition will reveal to viewers the history behind these micromechanics masterpieces and answer the question of why humanity has sought to breathe life into metal for centuries.
The exhibition is open from October 16, 2026. Guided tour programs have been running since October 20, allowing visitors to examine rare exhibits in detail and learn the secrets of their creation.
Details, schedules, and advance registration for tours are available on the official website of the museum Collection.
