Updates on the museum Collection website: "Authors/Manufacturers" section
We continue to regularly update the sections of the museum Collection website.
Today, our focus is on one of the key updates in the "Authors/Manufacturers" category: an in-depth biographical feature on Henri Maillardet, a distinguished Swiss watchmaker and creator of extraordinary mechanical accessories, musical instruments, and automata.
Despite the exquisite craftsmanship and refined decoration of Maillardet’s creations, he is mentioned significantly less frequently in specialized studies than his illustrious contemporaries – James Cox, Henri-Louis Jaquet-Droz, and Jean-Frédéric Leschot. Nevertheless, although only a few surviving examples of his work have come down to us, the structural principles of Maillardet’s automata largely defined the development of mechanics throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. For instance, the famous series of musical automata known as "Pierrot writing a letter" (including an 1880s piece by the Gustave Vichy firm from our collection) was clearly inspired by his legendary "The Modern Writer."
To this day, Henri Maillardet’s works continue to captivate the imagination with the incredible fluidity of their movements. This lifelike quality sets his legacy apart from many of his colleagues and competitors, turning every surviving mechanical beast or writing doll into a true masterpiece of engineering.
We invite you to discover the biography of this outstanding master in our new feature, where you can learn how his inventions inspired the 21st-century cinema and explore the highly complex, spring-driven mechanism of antique automata.
