Thematic Album: Singing Birds by J. Kurz & Co.
Automata and Musical Boxes from the Late 19th to the Mid-20th Century
In the late 19th and the first half of the 20th century, the German city of Hanau was renowned not only for its jewelry-making but also for the creation of astonishing mechanical wonders. One of the recognized leaders in this field was the firm J. Kurz & Co., whose craftsmen masterfully combined highly complex mechanics with exquisite decorative and applied art.
The primary secret of these objects is concealed within. Upon winding the mechanism or pressing a discreet lever, a miniature bird with vibrant plumage literally comes to life: it flutters its wings, turns its head, opens its beak, and bursts into an astonishingly clear song that emulates living nature.
The masters of J. Kurz & Co. hid these fragile musical mechanisms within the most unexpected casings. In our thematic album, you will see both classical rectangular boxes and rare zoomorphic automata. Songbirds are concealed beneath the shells of whimsical mechanical tortoises, hidden within the body of an elegant miniature grand piano, and adorn the figures of exotic elephants and ostriches.
We invite you on a journey through the world of antique mechanics, where the technical genius of the past has been transformed into pure art.
