New tour "Stepan Erzya. Sculptor's Works in Contrast of Epochs".

On Friday, March 29, a new guided tour program "Stepan Erzya. At the junction of genres and epochs" will start, which includes a visit to the thematic exhibition "In dialogue with Chaco" and a visit to the sculpture gallery of our permanent exhibition. Stepan Dmitrievich Erzya (Nefyodov, 1876-1959) - one of the greatest Russian sculptors of the 20th century, whose personality and fate are a vivid example of the productivity of intercultural dialogue. The works of Stepan Erzya (1876-1959) are often attributed to the "modern" style. At the beginning of the 20th century, Russian sculptors worked at the intersection of different genres, making their works unique and memorable. Erzya, like his teacher Paolo Trubetskoy (1866-1838), mixed modernism and impressionism in his work. The artist possessed a cult of beauty, recognizing it as the highest value. The main features of his work include the aestheticization of the concept of human beings (including the heightened role of the emotional element and accentuated eroticism); the aestheticization of nature and the natural material of art; the principle of holism - recognition of the universal connection and animation. The sculptor's characteristics include the aestheticization of artistic form (decorativism), a rejection of tendencies towards deaestheticization typical of avant-garde artistic movements, and a heightened interest in eras dominated by the aesthetic factor in culture (antiquity, the Renaissance, the era of romanticism). Erzya's work is characterized by a hyperbolic valuation of art, the proclamation of it as the highest form of human activity, and the associated cult of the Artist, aestheticization of the artistic process, anti-pragmatism, as well as the combination of the beautiful and the terrible (which was a challenge to the bourgeois, petty-bourgeois system of values). Beauty in Erzya's worldview and creativity is the "touchstone" of Good and Truth, its purpose - the salvation of the world. By visiting the guided tour program "Stepan Erzya. At the junction of genres and epochs", you will be able to hear a detailed story about the sculptor's work, focused on comprehensive analysis of human nature.
