Update in the srction "Russian Sculpture": masterpieces by E. Lanceray
The "Russian Sculpture" section on the museum Collection website has been expanded with the works of Eugene Alexandrovich Lanceray (1848-1886), an outstanding Russian animalier sculptor, recognized master of small-scale plastic art, and the founder of the domestic cabinet bronze genre.
During his short yet phenomenally productive 37-year life, Lanceray created over 400 works. His art achieved international acclaim during his lifetime, and today his pieces are the pride of major public and private museum collections.
The updated online collection offers a closer look at the key features of the sculptor's signature style. The horse always remained the central focus of Lanceray's attention. The sculptor captured the anatomy, gaits, and temperament of the animals with flawless precision. Each horse in his compositions is endowed with a striking individuality and a unique character.
The artisan masterfully combined the historical accuracy of his subjects with meticulous rendering of the smallest details: from the texture of astrakhan hats (papakha) and the folds of Circassian coat to harness buckles and weapon ornamentation.
The iconic Russian troikas occupy a special place in the author's heritage. The dynamics and compositional boldness of these works create an astonishing illusion of life: it seems as if the rushing carriages are about to break free from their plinths and gallop away.
Having explored the updated 'Russian Sculpture' section online, you can continue your acquaintance with Russian plastic art in person.
