The automaton is fashioned as a dark-skinned musician sitting on a rectangular base and playing the banjo.
When the mechanism is switched on, the automaton comes to life: the performer's right wrist slides across the strings of the banjo, his lower jaw drops and rises to replicate singing, his eyes move, and his eyelashes open and close. The head performs complex turns and tilts, while the foot of his left leg moves. The action of the automaton is accompanied by the sounds of a musical movement equipped with a cylinder and a musical comb.
