The musical automaton, fashioned as a monkey sitting on a stool in front of a music stand featuring inscriptions and sheet music, is mounted on the top panel of a dark brown wooden case raised on four tall legs. When the handle is turned, one of ten melodies plays: the monkey's left hand holding a violin and its right one, holding a bow, move to replicate playing the instrument; its head turns from side to side and moves up and down, its upper lip moves, and its eyelids rise and fall.
