The musical automaton, fashioned as a clown magician sitting on tall wooden stool with goldish legs and a seat covered in burgundy fabric with blue ribbon ruffling along the bottom edge. When the mechanism is wound and switched on, one of two melodies plays: the magician lowers and raises his eyelids, energetically turns his head from side to side, and up and down, while his right hand holding a handkerchief raises to reveal the contents of the top hat – either a three-dimensional cat's head or a small mouse figure; simultaneously, the conjurer's right leg moves up and down in rhythm with the music.
