Bronze, marble, ivory; gilding, casting, ivory carving
Signature “A. Gory”
The sculpture depicts a girl in a long dress paused in an elegant pose. One arm hangs along the body, the other is raised to the face, while the slight tilt of the head lends the image a thoughtful quality. The freely falling dress is gathered into broad folds that emphasize the flowing silhouette. Gilt bronze creates a warm contrast with the pale ivory used for the head, shoulders and hands. The marble base completes the composition. The refinement of the gesture and attention to costume details relate the work to images of the “society woman” popular in Art Deco decorative sculpture.
