Affortunato Gory
Bronze, marble, onyx (base), ivory; gilding, casting, patination, ivory carving
Signature “A. Gory” on the base
“Dancer” is shown in a flowing movement. The turn of the torso and the free gesture of the arms convey the rhythm of the dance. Smooth surfaces in the costume are combined with relief draperies, creating a play of light on the bronze. Gilding and patination enrich the tones of the metal, while the pale ivory of the face and exposed parts of the body contrasts with the bronze in color and texture. The work reflects the early-20th-century European fascination with ballet, variety theatre and stage performances, which became an important source of subjects for sculptors.
