Bronze, onyx (base), ivory; gilding, casting, patination, ivory carving
39.7 × 21 × 13 cm
Signature “A. Gory”
The sculpture depicts an Oriental dancer in a richly decorated costume. The flowing curve of the body and raised arms convey the rhythm of movement, continued by the long folds of the clothing. Different tones of patina—golden, dark and lighter—emphasize details of the costume and the varied bronze surface. The face and exposed parts of the body are made of pale ivory, contrasting with the metal in color and texture. The onyx base emphasizes the slender proportions of the figure.
Images of Oriental dancers were popular in European decorative art of the early 20th century and reflected the period’s characteristic interest in Eastern cultures.
