Young lady
Young lady
Germany
Second half of the 19th century
Ivory; ivory carving, polishing
Height 22,5 cm; without base 15 cm; base 7,5 × 7 × 7 cm
The statuette of a young lady is carved entirely from ivory and demonstrates the possibilities of the material without a color contrast with metal. Particular attention is given to the elegant dress, gloves, hat, and parasol: fine carving, in places openwork, conveys the complexity of the costume and its decorative details. The figure stands on a turned base of the same material, so that it is perceived as a unified sculptural whole. The work of an unknown German master of the second half of the 19th century belongs to the tradition of virtuoso cabinet ivory carving.
