Circa 1900
Étienne Watrin
Bronze, ivory, marble; casting, ivory carving, gilding
Height 33,5 cm
Signature «E. WATRIN CISELEUR PARIS» on the dress
The Court Lady is shown in a richly ornamented Elizabethan costume. The young woman takes a coin from an open purse. Her face, hands, and the coin itself are carved from ivory, while the dress and headdress are made of gilded bronze. This combination of materials heightens the impression of preciousness and emphasizes the fine detailing of the costume. Étienne Watrin's work dates to around 1900, a period when references to the Middle Ages and Renaissance were widespread and closely connected with fin-de-siècle culture, Symbolism, and Art Nouveau.
