Dancer
First half of the 20th century
L. Maupertuis
Bronze, ivory, marble (base); casting, ivory carving, painting
Height approx. 42.5 cm
Signature «Maupertuis» on the base
The dancer is shown descending a staircase during a performance. Her arms extended forward, raised leg, and short flared skirt create a sense of continuous stage movement. Painted bronze distinguishes the details of the costume, while the pale ivory of the exposed parts of the body stands out through its smoother surface. The base is particularly unusual: instead of a neutral support, a small marble staircase is used, becoming part of the narrative and reinforcing the direction of movement. The combination of a dynamic dance theme, polychromy, and the geometry of stone is close to the decorative aesthetics of Art Deco.
