"Girl with a Mirror" ('Young asian woman") is a chryselephantine statuette of 1919 in which an Orientalist image is combined with Alonzo’s characteristic fondness for ornate costume and contrasting materials. Gilt bronze forms the main mass of the clothing and provides a warm reflective surface; the ivory face and exposed parts of the body appear lighter and smoother. The clear verticality of the figure is softened by the modelling of the drapery and details of the headdress. Interest in exoticized types was a notable feature of European decorative art in the first decades of the 20th century and was later developed further in Art Deco. The black marble base creates a strict chromatic background and emphasizes the gilding of the bronze.
