The dancer is shown taking a broad, rapid step, echoed by the forward inclination of the torso and the restrained gesture of the hands raised towards the face. The long bronze skirt plays the principal role in the sculptural treatment. Its drapery becomes particularly pronounced in the lower part, where the fabric opens into broad angular folds that convey the direction of movement. The dark patinated bronze sets off the pale ivory of the head and exposed parts of the body, while polishing brings out the smoothness of the ivory surface. The difference between the materials makes the transition from the broadly modelled body to the more articulated texture of the clothing especially evident. The elongated light-marble pedestal corresponds to the extended pose and concludes the work with a firm horizontal line.
