Lucien Alliot’s "Pierrot" is conceived as a unified figure, almost monumental despite its small size. The loose costume with wide sleeves forms broad, soft volumes, while the raised head and hands gathered at the chest give the image theatrical expressiveness. Gilt bronze conveys the weight of the fabric and the play of light on the folds; ceramic is used as a material with a lighter and smoother surface than the metal. The theme of Pierrot was widespread in the decorative arts of the 1910s and 1920s, where the commedia dell’arte character was treated outside any specific performance—as a recognizable theatrical type.
