Pierrot with Flowers
Pierrot with Flowers
Circa 1925
Victor
Bronze, ivory, onyx; casting, ivory carving, patination
Height 19.5 cm
Signature «Victor» on the base
"Pierrot with flowers" is shown not in traditionally melancholic inactivity, but in mid-step with a large bouquet raised to his shoulder. The irregular rhythm of the folds in the loose costume and the large collar enliven the compact bronze figure. The pale ivory of the face and hands stands out sharply against the dark metal, while the flowers form the most elaborately worked part of the statuette. The figure of Pierrot, originating in the commedia dell’arte, was especially popular in European decorative art of the 1920s and readily combined theatrical tradition with Art Deco aesthetics. The tall onyx base emphasizes the small scale of the figure and reinforces its verticality.
