The sculpture depicts a young woman carrying a bundle. The bronze clothing forms the main sculptural mass, while the pale ivory of the face and exposed parts of the body sets them apart from the metal. The bundle becomes the principal narrative motif, lending the figure concrete storytelling detail without disturbing the statuette’s concise character. Such intimate chryselephantine works were characteristic of French decorative sculpture in the first half of the 20th century, combining traditional figural sculpture with an interest in everyday genre subjects. The onyx base adds the natural patterning of stone to the work.
