Judith is shown at the moment after her victory over Holofernes: the severed head lies at her feet and she holds a sword. Alonzo, however, treats the dramatic biblical subject primarily as a striking decorative image. The long belted dress with an open bodice creates a complex surface of gilt bronze, while the face and exposed parts of the body, carved in ivory, stand out in a lighter tone. This combination of materials is characteristic of Art Deco chryselephantine sculpture. The black-and-green marble base with white veining intensifies the richness of the overall colour scheme.
