The sculpture depicts a young man in Renaissance costume. The bronze clothing forms a dense, intricately articulated volume, while the pale ivory of the face and exposed parts of the body softens the weight of the metal. Gilding enhances the ornate character of the figure and emphasizes individual details of the costume. Renaissance fashion was a popular source of inspiration in European decorative sculpture around the turn of the 20th century: the historical motif made it possible to combine narrative content with richness of materials. The onyx base complements the statuette with the natural pattern of the stone and gives it the finished character of a cabinet sculpture.
