Nymph and Cupid
Nymph and Cupid
Fatory
Bronze; ivory; marble (base); casting; ivory carving; gilding
Height 37.5 cm
The nymph and Cupid are presented in a combination of mythological subject matter and striking materials characteristic of early-20th-century decorative sculpture. Gilt bronze forms the main body of the work, while pale ivory highlights the exposed areas of the body and introduces a finer, smoother texture. The interaction of the two figures gives the group an intimate character, while differences in scale and gesture enliven the composition. The warm gleam of the metal is especially pronounced beside the matte surface of the ivory. A marble base completes the statuette with a strict geometric form.
