An oval-shaped gold snuffbox with a hinged lid, decorated with enamel. Inserted into the lid is an oval painted miniature featuring a profile portrait of Pope Pius VII. The miniature is enclosed in wide frame with floral and geometric pattern and bead-and-reel (beading) border. The remaining surface of the lid is covered with translucent light blue enamel over guilloché ground; the rim is highlighted by bead border, and the side of the lid features an ornamental border. The body of the item is decorated with rectangular reserves containing translucent light blue enamel over guilloché ground, separated by depictions of urns against stylized columns. The base is adorned with an oval reserve featuring translucent dark blue enamel over guilloché ground, enclosed by ornamental frame. The snuffbox is housed in the oval leather case, with an inscription on the exterior of its hinged lid reading: “EX DONO PII PPVII // PAULO VANDERVRECKEN // 1814” (“Gift of Pope Pius VII to Paul Vandervrecken, 1814”).
