The lid is fashioned as a carved, translucent figure of a hound made of purple and milky-white amethyst; the animal's eyes are inset with old European cushion-cut diamonds. The figure is enclosed in a fluted gold mount. The front of the body features a protruding flower-shaped push-button catch set with a diamond and a red stone. The base of the object is formed by a similar carved amethyst plaque.
