Vase depicting ivy
Vase depicting ivy
France, Nancy
First quarter of the 20th century
Glass; engraving, acid etching
22 cm
Signed: Daum Nancy
Wide, hemispherical bowl of the vase features a softly curved rim that tapers into a narrowed stem, set upon a stable circular foot (piédouche). A complex marbled background (fond jaspé marmoréen) is used, showcasing smooth transitions between shades of ochre, yellow, and muted green. Against this internally glowing background, the dark, rich decoration of deep blue, green, and purple stands out in sharp contrast. The walls of the vessel are adorned with an elegant, continuous Art Nouveau botanical ornament depicting trailing branches, leaves, and berries of ivy. The relief leaves are meticulously detailed, creating a vivid sense of living nature.
