We present the first part in a series of articles on the life and inventions of Abraham-Louis Breguet, a Swiss-born French watchmaker who created timepieces of unique complexity, precision, and reliability at the turn of the 19^th century. In this first part, we will explore the beginning of Abraham-Louis Breguet’s journey, the history behind the founding of his watch making workshop, and the historical events and prominent figures who, in one way or another, influenced the master watchmaker's destiny.
