Complex concepts in simple terms: the cire perdue method
Today in our "Complex concepts in simple terms" column, we explore the cire perdue method – a perfect fusion of art and rigorous engineering. The cire perdue method connects entire eras: it was used to cast ancient bronze statues, Fabergé jewelry masterpieces, and avant-garde sculptures of the last century.
The cire perdue method ("lost wax") is the oldest and most precise technology of art casting. It allows the most complex three-dimensional silhouettes to be transferred into bronze, gold, or silver, preserving the smallest details – from the author's fingerprints to the finest strokes.
The art of lost-wax casting is over six thousand years old: early copper artifacts from the 4th millennium BC were discovered by archaeologists in the Levant (the famous Nahal Mishmar hoard). Later, the method was actively adopted in Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, and Rome for casting monumental statues. During the Renaissance, the technology experienced a second revival thanks to Donatello and Benvenuto Cellini. The latter not only created masterpieces but also left behind a unique casting guide in his 1568 “Treatise on Sculpture”.
The essence of the method is elegant, and the process itself consists of six consecutive steps. First, the artisan creates an exact wax replica of the future item, knowing that any accidental scratch on the wax will ultimately be replicated perfectly in metal. Next comes the assembly stage: wax sprues are attached to the model to allow the alloy to flow in and air to escape, making the structure look like a branchy tree. The resulting system is then covered with a liquid refractory slurry based on plaster or ceramics.
As it hardens, it forms a durable external shell. Next, this mold is heated in a kiln: the wax melts and drains out completely, leaving an ideal hollow space inside that flawlessly mirrors the contours of the original. Liquid metal is then poured into the glowing-hot cocoon, instantly filling the vacant space. Once the casting cools, the outer shell is broken away with a hammer, and the finished piece is cleared of the technical "twigs," sanded, polished, and coated with a patina for protection and a refined finish.
The primary advantage of cire perdue remains its flawless, hair-thin precision and the total absence of seams on the finished product. However, the technology has a downside: high cost due to the immense amount of meticulous hand labour, as well as the irreversibility of the process. Both the wax model and the refractory mold must be irrevocably destroyed to create each unique piece.
The museum Collection repository features a number of iconic works by M.K. Tenisheva, including pieces from her original "The Enchanted Beasts" series. These small, three-dimensional bronze figurines were cast in her Parisian workshop in 1908, using the cire perdue (lost-wax) technique and covered with champlevé enamel in various tones.
