Music compilation for Global Beatles Day

Today is the Global Beatles Day, a day when the world celebrates the legacy of the most influential musical group of the 20th century. This date was not chosen at random: on June 25, 1967, The Beatles appeared on the BBC show Our World.

The Liverpool quartet performed the song ‘All You Need Is Love,’ which was broadcast to an international audience and viewed by 400 million people. On that day, The Beatles united the whole world with their song. ‘All You Need Is Love’ became an anthem of optimism and self-belief, a symbol of the hippie movement and the 60s generation.

Over the years, The Beatles have achieved cult status. They have sold over 800 million albums, both hard and digital copies. They have won seven Grammy Awards, fifteen Ivor Novello Awards and an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. The memory of the songwriters, talented performers and musicians lives on in the hearts of their fans, despite the band ceasing live performances back in 1966 and their subsequent break-up in 1970.

Fans of the band have been celebrating Global Beatles Day since 2009. The holiday was initiated by Faith Cohen, a fan of the band. Faith calls this celebration ‘a message of gratitude or a declaration of love’ to her idols. The fan told Paul McCartney's wife about her desire to create the holiday when she presented her with a T-shirt with the Global Beatles Day print already on it at a concert in Cincinnati. Thus, another holiday in honour of the musicians appeared on the calendar, which is celebrated in various corners of the globe.

The Beatles are ranked among the greatest performers of all time by Rolling Stone magazine, and their songs are played every 15 seconds. Twenty-three Beatles songs made it onto the list of the 500 greatest songs, and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, their eighth studio album, ranks first among the best albums. It should be noted that ‘Beatlemania’ is a term that appears in many dictionaries of different languages around the world. It first appeared in 1963, in the Daily Mirror newspaper. Global Beatles Day helps us to once again appreciate the enormous contribution these musicians have made to world culture. Throughout their career, they promoted the idea that we can all live in a world built on the ideas of sincere love and truth.

In 2025, Global Beatles Day will be particularly significant, marking 65 years since the band's first concert in Hamburg (June 25, 1960). It seems that The Beatles existed for a long time, but in fact, they only lasted ten years, from 1960 to 1970. After the band broke up, each of the musicians continued their solo careers. In 1980, John Lennon was murdered near his home in New York, and in 2001, George Harrison died of cancer. Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr are still involved in music today. The music of the group sparked changes in the way people expressed themselves, in fashion trends, in sex and in art. This is a day to reflect on how they influenced the whole world in terms of culture and music.

A Musical selection dedicated to World Beatles Day is posted in the museum Music Library.
