The map originates from the first volume of the two-volume atlas «Maps of Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge» (London: Chapman and Hall, 1844. Vol 1.-2.), published in 1844 by order of the “Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge” founded in London in 1826 in order to improve the level of education of British workers and middle class representatives. The maps included in this edition were created in parts during several years; and the example of this work is the map of the southern part of Russia and Georgia published in 1835 by publishing house “Baldwin & Cradock” and compiled on the basis of the data of the atlases of Saint Petersburg Academy of Science and complemented with a graduated scale in English miles. United in a “single” two-volume “block” published in 1844 by “Chapman and Hall” publishing house the maps of the atlas were sold also separately.
