Inscriptions on the front decalcomania: “THE GRAPHOPHONE/ PATENTED MAY 4. 1886, DEC. 27. 1887, APRIL 3. 1888, JUNE 10.01890, OCT.16. 1894, MARCH 30. 1897, JULY 27, 1897./Columbia Phonograph Co. New York & London. On the shaped decalcomania: “THE GRAPHOPHONE AND COLUMBIA RECORDS WERE AWARDED THE GRAND PRIZE AT THE PARIS EXPOSITION OF 1900 AND ST LOUIS EXPOSITION 1904”. On the carriage frame: “GRAPHOPHONE”. On the round nameplate on the end of the back rod: “1477/PATENTED – JULY 16, 1901 – FEB. 28, 1905”. On the cylinder: “2146/THE KERRY DANCE. ELIZABETH SPENCER/Thomas A. Edison PAT’D 15”
The phonograph is housed in rectangular oak case featuring a profiled baseboard and cornice. A nickel-plated chassis of the phonograph mechanism is mounted on the top panel. The phonograph is closed by a removable domed lid with profiled mouldings and a carrying handle. The vertical corners of both the case and the lid are adorned with turned half-columns. The side walls of the case are panelled. Cast, figured, patinated folding carrying handles are mounted on the case sides.
