Phonograph exposed mechanism is mounted on a metal panel screwed to a wooden base. The mechanism consists of a spring motor, a gear and a device for movement of a sound box with membrane and sapphire needle along the recording cylinder, assembled on stamped brackets. The model name, manufacturer’s mark, trading house title and the patents dates are on the right bracket. During playback, the needle is lowered into the sound groove on the cylinder, that is jacketed in the driving cylinder, and repeats the recorded vibrations. The vibrations are transferred to the membrane and turn into sound that is amplified by a conical horn attached to the sound box. A key installed on the left side of the mechanism activates the engine spring. The horn is disconnected from the sound box and stored separately in non-operating position. American Graphophone Company - one of the first sound recording firms, was founded on March 28, 1887 for production of phonographs created by Charles Sumner Tainter, Alexander Graham Bell’s associate. Subsequently, the company was merged by the Columbia Phonograph Company and produced phonographs until 1916, when it was reorganized in Columbia Graphophone Manufacturing Company.
