The automaton, fashioned as a seated girl, is mounted on the top panel of a rectangular wooden base with the cover made of burgundy velvet trimmed with metallic purl braid along the edge.
The spring-driven musical movement equipped with a musical comb and a cylinder; and the control mechanism with four cams and six levers are housed inside the base. A winding key hole and a pull-out start/stop button are located at the back.
When the mechanism is switched on, a melody plays: the girl tilts forward and backward, and her left hand moves as if rocking a doll, while her left leg raises and lowers. She then raises her right hand holding a rattle, shakes it, and raises and lowers her right leg, tapping it on the floor. Her head moves up and down and smoothly turns from side to side, with all actions repeating several times to the musical accompaniment.
Léopold Lambert was granted French patent No. 238,207 for the automaton of similar design in May 1894. A winding key is in the set.
