The automaton is housed in a wooden case veneered with mahogany, with a protruding lower part, on a profiled base with carved ornament, on four round supports. A removable front panel of the lower part with a hinged horizontal lid is covered with glass with an engraved ornament in the corners, a crown and the inscription “REGINA CORONA”. Behind the panel, a carriage with twelve metal program discs with a diameter of 27 inches (68.58 cm) and a spring-driven disc changing device are mounted. On the front side of the upper part, decorated with a balustrade with urns and spires in the corners, there is an opening door with a lock and a glazed arch, corners with slotted ornament in the form of stylized dragons and turned columns. On the inner side, there is a lithograph depicting a muse, cherubs with musical instruments and an inscription. Under the upper panel, an acoustic chamber with round holes is placed. On the right side of the case, there are: a metal rectangular overlay with a slot for a coin, a glazed window, a lever and the inscription “5 Ȼ ”, “REGINA CO.”, “NEW-YORK-CHICAGO”, a plate with instructions for using the automaton, a metal lock overlay with a key, a winding handle of the musical movement, a winding handle of the disc changing device and a disc selection handle. Inside the case, on a rectangular golden chassis with the inscription “Regina” and number “48198”, a musical movement is installed consisting of two musical combs and an axle with a set of star-wheels between them, designed to transfer the force from a pin of the program disc to a tooth of the musical comb, a horizontal bar with pressure rollers and a roller for supporting the disc. On the right, a spring drive of the disc, a starting lever and a coin chute are installed.
When a five-cent coin is dropped, the springs are wound and a disc is selected, the mechanism turns on, the carriage shifts, the selected disc rises through blocks by metal rods to the musical movement, rotates, the pins touch the corresponding star-wheels, which, in turn, touch the teeth of the musical combs, and a melody sounds. After the melody ends, the disc stops automatically and lowers into its place in the carriage. The set includes a key, a winding handle and twelve discs.
Musical carrier: pinned disc.
Inscriptions on the glass: “REGINA CORONA”, on the chassis: “Regina”, “48198”, on the plate: “CAUTON”, “Wind carefully until winding crank to stop. The underside of tune sheets must be kept slightly oiled to preserve tone and lasting qualities of this instrument/ Directions for oiling, an oiler, oil, etc, are furnished with each box.
