«The Spinner» presents a historicized image of a young court lady in a richly decorated Renaissance costume. The vertical stance is softened by the gesture of the hand supporting the distaff, while the sumptuous clothing allows the sculptor to elaborate the bronze surface in detail. Polychrome patination and cold painting accent individual elements of the costume, while the ivory head and hands are distinguished by their smoothness and pale tone. Such chryselephantine statuettes combined historical subject matter with the first half of the 20th century’s characteristic taste for precious-looking textures in decorative sculpture. The green-brown onyx base complements the work’s complex colour scheme.
