Sun dancer
Sun dancer
France, Paris
Circa 1920
Bronze, ivory; casting, patination, ivory carving, gilding
Height 53 cm
Signature on the round base: “CJR Colinet”
The “Sun Dancer” is captured at the moment of a complex dance movement. The figure balances on one leg, the other is bent and raised, and the torso is tilted backward. One arm is directed upward, while the other is placed behind her head, enhancing the impression of a rapid rush. Special expressiveness is given to the sculpture by the costume: numerous folds and loose edges of the clothing seem caught up by the movement. Gilded and polychrome bronze is combined with the ivory of the exposed parts of the body. The round pedestal is decorated with a bronze relief depicting the sun—a detail directly related to the author's title of the work (“Sun Dancer”).
