Dawn
Dawn
France, Paris
First half of the 20th century
Ivory, marble (pedestal); ivory carving, polishing, casting
Height 26.1 cm
Signature on the pedestal: “Cl.J.R. Colinet”
The nude female figure stretches upward: her legs are placed together, and her arms are raised above her head, forming a single smooth contour. This construction makes the composition calm and integral. There are almost no additional details here, so focus is concentrated on the proportions of the body, the soft curve of the torso, and the smooth surface of the ivory. Polishing emphasizes the natural pattern of the material and the smoothness of the modeling. The small marble pedestal contrasts with the warm tone of the ivory and visually completes the vertical line of the figure. The model is known under the title “Dawn” and is published in the book by Bryan Catley dedicated to Art Deco and Jugendstil sculpture.
