On the base: author's signature and founder's mark
The model, set on an oval base ('ground') with a smooth oval plinth, was created in 1883. At the center of this composition, filled with drama and despair, is a horse under a high saddle, its head bowed low over its fallen master. She is licking his face, as if trying to breathe life into the motionless body. The horse is the central figure of the composition.
