Silver oval tureen with four protruding lobes, two handles, and a removable cover, raised on four feet. The body of the tureen is divided into four rectangular compartments, each featuring a large shaped medallion enclosing the coat of arms of the Scottish Hope family (clan) surrounded by foliate ornament. The lower section of the tureen is accented by a band of stylized ovolo (egg-and-dart) molding, and the upper section by foliate ornament set against a textured ground. The cover is decorated with bands of foliate and zoomorphic ornament and surmounted by a finial in the form of a sculptural group of three putti carrying a tortoise. The handles are formed as figures of putti seated upon and striking the arched backs of dogs. The rounded feet are decorated with ovolo motifs and foliate ornament.
