France, Nancy
Late 19th century
Ceramics; polychrome painting, gold painting, glazing
An intaglio mark reading 'Émile Gallé à Nancy Déposé' in three lines; to the right: a two-line ornamental inscription in red paint reading 'E. Gallé Nancy'
The ceramic trinket box is formed as a winter pleasure sleigh with a removable lid, featuring two figures of children. At the front of the sleigh, beneath a semi-circular protective hood (canopy), are two moulded figures: a boy wearing a headpiece on the left and a girl on the right, tucked under a blanket. The body of the sleigh is adorned with floral motifs (bouquets of roses, forget-me-nots, and other wildflowers), as well as depictions of insects, such as butterflies and beetles. The edges and protruding elements of the box are accentuated with gilt highlights
