The clock is housed in a rectangular wooden case, lined with plates made of tortoiseshell, topped with a decorative gabled step roof. Cast gilded vases are installed on the corner platforms and at the peak of the roof. The pediments are adorned with two gilded decorative elements composed of flowers, leaves, and scrolls. The tambours of the pediments are covered with openwork wooden grills. The case is mounted on a stepped pedestal with cast gilded feet shaped like rocaille at the corner projections. Four corners of the case are decorated with gilded herms resting on floral garlands. The front and back are secured with arched glazed doors. Arched windows on the sides of the case are covered with openwork cast grills featuring images of female busts surrounded by scrolls, branches, and acanthus leaves. Behind the arched door on the facade side is a dial shield with four silvered ring dials. The central position features a large ring clock face with Roman numerals for the hours and stylized lilies in between. A figurative minute scale with Arabic numerals for five-minute intervals runs along the outer circumference, while a narrow scale with quarter-hour divisions lines the inner circumference. The hour and minute hands are openwork blued metal. Engraved within the ring are circular openings with square pins for the winding key, a lunar calendar with a moon phase indicator, a square date window, and an arching plaque with the manufacturer's name and place of production - Benson & Higgs, London. Surrounding the clock face are four openwork cast bronze overlays depicting masks surrounded by flowers and branches. In the arched section of the dial shield are small limbers with blued switches for the chime and the strike, and a melody switch. Between the limbers are miniature painted images of flowers. Hour intervals are struck by a hammer on a large bell, while quarter hours are chimed in a Dutch manner with two hammers on two small bells. The musical mechanism includes a carillon made of eleven bells and twenty-two hammers. The program carrier is a brass cylinder with pins coded for six melodies:
• A Riggadoon
• An English Lille
• Granadiers March
• Flowers of Edinburgh
• The Happy Clown
• Batt’s Hornpipe
The melodies play at the beginning of each hour or on demand using a cord on the right side of the case. The mechanisms for the clock, chime, and music are powered by three springs with three fusees. The clock has an eight-day movement, anchor escapement, and a pendulum on a spring suspension. A key for the doors is included.
