Printed matter is a unique documentary record of the era, reflecting the visual history, daily life, and aesthetics of the turn of the 20^th century. The materials presented in this section clearly illustrate the development of the printing arts and introduce visitors to the works of prominent masters of the time. The core of the collection is comprised of vintage postcards (open letters), the mass production of which in the Russian Empire began after its accession to the Universal Postal Union in 1884. Portrait postcards based on photographs from leading studios in Russia and Europe hold a special place in the collection.
The section also includes playbills and posters that vividly reflect the social and cultural life of that epoch.
Among the most valuable exhibits are graphic sheets by the German artist Christian Geissler, high-art prototypes by Karl Fischer, rare publications by Nikolai Krestovnikov, and other unique printed materials.
