Edison “Gem – model A” phonograph is designed to play back recordings from a wax cylinder for 2 minutes. The mechanism is mounted in a molded metal case, painted with black enamel, decorated with thin golden frames on each face and mounted on a wooden base. The device is closed with a semicircular wooden lid of “tiger” oak, with a carrying handle.
A motor is mounted inside the case. The cylinder drive mechanism, drive spindle, guide rail with a carriage and a sound box are above it. A start button on the case left side activates the engine. The motor spring is wound up with a key that fits into the socket on the case.
Phonographs of this series were produced in 1900 – 1901’s.
