The automaton is mounted on rectangular lacquered wooden base with cut-out corner feet. A simple wooden table is positioned on the base top surface, behind which sits the figure of a young man on a low stool.
When the mechanism is switched on, the figure comes to life: the head rises,
the right hand lifts a spoon with a "dumpling" toward the mouth; the
hand lowers and rises again, the lower jaw drops, and the ball falls in the
open mouth. As the hand lowers the spoon back on the plate, the ball rolls
through a channel inside the figure's torso and pops out of an opening in the
food mound right back into the spoon. The actions repeat to the sounds of the
musical movement.
