The bright folk costume is the main expressive element of this small figure. The girl tilts her head slightly and folds her hands across her chest; this simple gesture lends the image immediacy and emphasizes the childlike character of the model. The face is made of pale ivory, while the clothing is richly polychromed and gilded. The floral ornament of the broad skirt, red shoes, scarf and headdress form an elegant combination of red, green, black and gold. The substantial green-onyx base sets off the miniature figure. Here the stylized “national” costume functions primarily as a decorative motif, allowing the sculptor to combine an expressive silhouette with rich colour.
