Girl with a Bird
Girl with a Bird
France
First half of the 20th century
Ivory; сarving
H. 37 cm; without base – 31 cm; base – 6 × 11.5 × 11.5 cm
The figure is carved almost entirely from ivory, so its expressiveness depends not on contrasting materials but on the refinement of the carving. The girl leans slightly toward the bird perched on her open palm; her other hand is raised in a cautious gesture, as though she is trying not to frighten her small visitor. The turn of the head and curve of the body lend gentle movement to the otherwise static figure. The costume is particularly detailed: numerous folds, ruffles, embroidered patterns, a bow-tied belt and an elaborate hairstyle create the impression of an elegant genre scene. The pale ivory surface unifies the figure, clothing and bird, allowing the carver’s workmanship to be appreciated in every detail.
