Dancer with Cymbals
Dancer with Cymbals
France, Paris
First third of the 20th century
Derenne, Alexandre Joseph (Alexandre Joseph Derenne), after a model by Max Le Verrier, “Le Verrier” foundry
Bronze, ivory; portoro marble
Casting, patination, carving H. 50 cm; without base – 35 cm
Signature: “DERENNE”; foundry stamp: “Le Verrier”
The dancer appears to have been caught at the most intense point of her movement. Balancing on one leg, she thrusts the other forward and spreads her arms wide, holding cymbals. The curved line of the torso, the turn of the head and the gestures moving in different directions create the impression of a rapid, almost acrobatic dance. The pale ivory discs are especially striking against the dark patinated bronze and mark the outermost points of the figure as it opens into space. The tall Portoro-marble pedestal with golden veining heightens the contrast of materials while emphasizing the delicacy of the balance. The sculpture combines an interest in dance movement with the dramatic pairing of bronze, ivory and coloured stone – materials especially favoured in Art Deco decorative sculpture.
