Girl in a coat
Girl in a coat
Late 19th century
Charles Eloy Bailly
Bronze, ivory, marble; casting, ivory carving, patination, cold painting
22 × 8 cm
The girl is shown in a winter coat, which gives the statuette a compact and unified silhouette. The bronze's double silver- and gold-toned patina animates the surface of the clothing, while the ivory of the exposed parts of the body creates a pale contrast. The small scale reinforces the intimate character of the image, close to the genre sculpture of the second half of the 19th century. The signature of Charles Eloy Bailly connects the work with the French tradition of chryselephantine sculpture.
