Young lady with a bird
Young lady with a bird
Early 20th century
Louis Barthélemy
Bronze, ivory, onyx; casting, ivory carving, patination, cold painting, gilding
Height 30,7 cm
Signature «L. Barthelemy»
The young lady is shown with a small bird in her left hand, a detail that gives the fashionable image a more intimate and spontaneous quality. Golden-brown patina and polychrome painting on the bronze are combined with pale carved ivory, tinted in places. The green onyx base complements the color scheme and emphasizes the decorative character of the statuette. Louis Barthélemy specialized in chryselephantine sculpture. This work still displays the flowing lines and decorativeness of Art Nouveau, which would later give way to the more geometric forms of Art Deco.
