Dancer with ribbons
Dancer with ribbons
France
Circa 1925
Louis Barthélemy
Ivory, bronze, onyx; casting, ivory carving, gilding
Height 42 cm; figure 31 cm
Signature «L. Barthélémy»
The elongated silhouette of the young dancer is complemented by the flowing movement of ribbons that seem to continue her gesture. The gilded bronze costume contrasts with pale ivory, a combination characteristic of chryselephantine sculpture of the 1920s. The tall beige onyx base emphasizes the slenderness of the figure and enhances the decorative quality of the composition. Created around 1925, the statuette belongs to the heyday of Art Deco, when the image of the dancer became widespread in decorative sculpture.
